My 2008 Article in Marketing Pilgrim was also published in Social Media Today. There I made some bold predictions and most of them became true, except for the buzzy topic “SEO will be History”. Which was used intentionally to create buzz :-)
Prophecy #1: Onsite Search Engine Optimization (SEO) will be History
SEO is not dead and Visual Algorithm is not yet fully in place. But, Google now owns Chrome, whic they did not in 2008. So, they do have the technology to make it happen.
Prophecy #2: Searching will become more User-friendly
I actually predicted Google Search Preview and Instant Search here. This was not available in 2008.
Prophecy #3: More Personalized & Localized Results will Influence SEM
This is more true now. And more prominent than the personalized search in 2008.
Prophecy #4: Natural Language Reputation Algorithm will be a Great Factor
Google can identify LSI spamming. But, it is unsure that they are really using such algorithm.
Prophecy #5: Copying Themes will be punished by Near Duplicate Content Filter
Near duplicate contents are being covered by Google with the Penguin update. Google mentioned that they can identify content spinning.
Prophecy #6: TrustRank will be Stronger than PageRank
TrustRank was in infancy in 2008. But, this is more true now.
Prophecy #7: Online Social Media will kill Traffic from Search Engines
This was bold and I was true.
Prophecy #8: Handheld Devices will Rule Future Traffic
Remeber, I said Handhelds, not mobile phones. I really did not think about iPhone or iPad, which was not available during 2008. We are yet to see the groeth of Tablets. I also said:
Newsletter circulation will switch from emails to Online Social Medias
Isn’t that already happening through Facebook Pages?
Prophecy #9: Email will be the Least Used for Personal Communication
Bold prediction, I agree it was a bit predictable. But, it already has happened.
Prophecy #10: Personal Power to Influence Purchase will Increase
The power of blog is alredy prominent in Search Engines and Social Media. But, if Google fully implements its Authorship Program, this will be more true.
Prophecy #11: Web-based Consumer Analytics will be Major Internet Marketing Process
Web Analytics is no longer a tool for Webmasters and SEOs. It has spread to other part of managerial decission making. but, this has a long way to go.
Prophecy #12: Web Cluster and Widgets will mean Businesses for Small Companies
Well, it left it’s infancy and gained adoloscence in 2008. But, we know this is more true now and in it’s youth.
Prophecy #13: Future Internet Marketers will be Personal Helper
Corrected: The Broadcasting Media will Merge with the Internet
The published prophecy is more similar to Prophecy #11 (Consumer Analyics). So, I revised the prophecy and mentioned that TV, Internet, and Phone will be just one media.See on socialmediatoday.com
